Martin Crowe, the former New Zealand cricket captain is of the view that the ICC should concentrate on the two forms of cricket – Test, and T20. In an audio show hosted by Harsha Bhogle, he said that the focus on ODIs may in turn generate confusion.

“They [ICC] have to consolidate the two forms, like we sort of had it in the 70s and 80s with 50-overs cricket and Test cricket. Settle on Twenty20, just see out the life of 50-over cricket and therefore give Test cricket the chance to stand on it’s own as one strong pillar alongside Twenty20”, observes Crowe.

He also suggested that as a means to promote the test format, an annual Test Championship that constitutes seven six-day knockout matches. It would be held in such a way that all the teams would get a chance to prove their capabilities in test cricket. According to him, this would increase the relevance of tests and also make the game more popular. He also pointed at the need to take advantage of the rising appeal of T20.

Crowe also supported day-night Tests and the use of pink balls within the game format. He is of the view that test cricket needs more marketing and fan base and these measures would work in this direction. He also stressed the fact that Test is the purest and best form of cricket.
